Helping UK travelers discover the real Sri Lanka

Yala vs Udawalawe: Which Safari Should You Pick?

I’ve done both parks more times than I can count, and the choice really comes down to what you’re chasing. Want leopards? Yala is your best shot in Sri Lanka, hands down — it’s built its reputation almost entirely on its high density of Sri Lankan leopards, with Block 1 the hotspot. But be ready for company — Yala gets far more crowded than other parks, with long waits and jeeps jostling for the same sighting.

If elephants and breathing room matter more, Udawalawe is the clear winner — huge herds are almost guaranteed, while Yala sightings are less predictable since elephants there roam in smaller groups. It’s also far less crowded, which completely changes how immersive the experience feels.

My honest take: if you’ve got two days, do both. If you’ve only got one, ask yourself — leopard hunt or peaceful elephant herds? That answers it.
