Sinharaja \u2014 meaning &#8220;Lion King&#8221; \u2014 is steeped in legend, said to be the ancestral home of the Sinhala people.<br>But beyond the folklore, this is one of the last untouched lowland rainforests on the planet, and Sri Lanka&#8217;s first UNESCO World Heritage Site (1989). Spanning over 11,000 hectares across the southwest Wet Zone, it&#8217;s a haven for endemic birds, leopards, and an extraordinary range of biodiversity you simply won&#8217;t find in Europe.<br>If a city break has left you craving somewhere genuinely wild and off the beaten path, this is it. The easiest access is via the Kalawana\u2013Weddagala road from Colombo \u2014 just a few hours&#8217; drive, but a world away.
