Thalpe Beach – Galle, Sri Lanka

Located along Sri Lanka’s beautiful southern coast near Galle, Thalpe Beach is a peaceful seaside escape famous for its unique coral rock pools. These fascinating pools, traditionally carved into the coral reef by local villagers and once used for soaking coconut husks, now create a beautiful natural setting where visitors can enjoy the sea away from the busier beaches.

The best time to visit the famous rock pools is early in the morning from March to April, when the pools are often at their most visible and the surrounding sea conditions are generally calmer. During other periods, sand can accumulate inside the pools, so the distinctive rock formations may not be as easy to see.

Perfect for photographers, nature lovers and travellers looking for a quieter coastal experience, Thalpe offers beautiful turquoise water, golden sand and a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s traditional coastal way of life. Be careful around the sharp coral rocks and sea urchins, and consider wearing reef shoes when exploring the pools.

From Colombo, take the Southern Expressway (E01) towards Galle, continue along the Galle–Matara Road, and travel approximately 10–12 km beyond Galle towards Thalpe. The beach is close to the main coastal road and can also be easily reached from Galle Fort or Unawatuna.
